Live demonstrations of two-way VOIP, Telephony and Data Transfer While 'On-the-Move' Highlight Satellite 2006

Satellite 2006 and the streets of Washington DC provided the setting for General Dynamics’ live demonstrations of its WarriorTM Satcom-on-the-MoveTM terminals. High speed, two-way Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), telephony and data file transfers via satellite while on the move were repeatedly performed during the February Satellite trade show.

The live demonstrations were conducted for commercial, military and government communications professionals in General Dynamics’ dedicated WarriorTM Satcom-On-The-Move vehicle. The guests were able to transmit and receive voice, data and access the internet via commercial Ku-Band satellite while on-the move throughout the streets of Washington, D.C.

Brent Finemore, Director for Strategic Initiatives and Business Development for General Dynamics, said, “We are exceptionally pleased with the live demonstrations of our Satcom-On-The-MoveTM terminal. It conclusively demonstrates that our terminals are ready for immediate deployment and can provide high bandwidth communications anywhere in the world”.

General Dynamics’ WarriorTM Satcom product is leading the market by delivering true, On–The–MoveTM satellite communications. Available in 18, 20, 24 and 30-inch terminals, General Dynamic’s Satcom-On-the-MoveTM (SOTM) terminals are ruggedized for use by a wide variety of military and commercial vehicles. Developed for use under General Dynamics’ VertexRSI brand, the SOTMTM terminal has successfully demonstrated that its antenna can track a satellite and remain locked on the satellite during extreme off road (Churchville B) conditions. In addition, the General Dynamics’ SOTM terminals are the first of their type to be licensed by the FCC for use in the United States.

The SOTM terminal provides these fundamental performance features:

  • Reliable and continuous two-way communications with the satellite while On-The-Move
  • Transmit and receive data rates of up to 2 Mb/s and more while On-The-Move
  • Designed for use on a variety of military wheeled or tracked vehicles and heavy duty commercial vehicles in a wide range of operating conditions”

In recent US military trials, the General Dynamics Warrior SOTMTM terminals have proven their ability to deliver reliable, high-data rate video, voice, and data communications over satellite while on the move. In addition to military applications, the terminals are ideally suited for commercial news and weather reporting, homeland defense and disaster recovery uses to supplement or even replace disabled terrestrial communications systems.
